Packing our Backpacks: Take a Peek Into our Bags

Packing, I’ve never been good at it. I always brought more than I needed or simply brought the wrong things. For example, for our birthdays, Ben and I decided to take a trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto, Canada and I packed one pair of jeans, three dresses, sneakers, and some heels.

I don’t think I got the hint that it was January, or that it was the coldest weekend in Toronto until I had frost bits on my legs, feet, face, and hands. Needless to say, I froze. I had to buy warmer clothes and winter boots there. I don’t know what I was thinking when I was packing.

Fun but cold times in Canada

Hopefully, this time around, I hope we (mostly, me) can do it somewhat right.

So for our first adventure we did some research on the internet to see what other travelers packed for their trips. Something we learned quickly was, that everyone packs differently.

So, our packing list includes things that we believe we need, not just what everyone told us to bring. If we did that we would have been leaving with suitcases and not backpacks. All in all, we thought long and hard (argued about most) about each item we packed, and whether it was something we needed. Our list is based on our needs, and what we can carry so for you it might be different.

So here are the things we packed

Ben's Clothes

Ben’s Clothes:

  • Sneakers
  • Sandals
  • Hat
  • 1 Hoodie
  • 1 Pair of Jeans
  • 2 Shorts
  • 6 T-Shirts
  • 1 long sleeve T-Shirt
  • 1  Swimming Trunks
  • 6 Pairs of Socks
  • Raincoat

Jazzy's Clothes

(Did you notice that I needed two pictures to show all my clothes and Ben only needed one. I am convinced that it is way easier for guys to pack then for females, we just have too much shit)

Jazzy’s Clothes:

  • Sneakers
  • Sandals
  • 1 Hoodie
  • 1 Pair of Jeans
  • 1 Pair of Lightweight Pants
  • 2 Shorts
  • 2 Swimsuits
  • 3 T-Shirts
  • 1 long sleeve T-Shirt
  • 4 Tank Tops
  • 1 Dress
  • 5 Pairs of Socks
  • Raincoat

We didn’t pack much winter clothes because for this trip, we plan on following the warm weather. The second we think it is colder than hoodie and jeans weather we are off to the southern states and maybe when it gets warmer we will head back to the northern states we missed.

Camping Gear:

Technology:

  • Asus Transformer Laptop – we decided to go with a smaller and lighter laptop, that way the laptop doesn’t pack too much extra weight to our backpacks.
  • Samsung Galaxy S2 Phone (Unlocked) – an unlock phone was the best choice for us because just in case we plan to go beyond the USA, which I am 100% sure we will, we can simply put a local sim card in and be all set.
  • Portable USB Battery Charger – with all these electronics and the strong possibility of not finding an outlet in the woods, we brought along a portable charger.
  • External Hard Drive (500GB)
  • Headlamp
  • 8GB USB Stick
  • Kindle – Ben likes to read so this is all him, I might download some books on there too but I can’t imagine having time to read while trying to explore the USA

 Miscellaneous:

  • Sunscreen
  • USA Road Map
  • Insect Repellent Oil
  • Small First aid kit
  • Water bottle filter
  • Permanent Markers
  • Earplugs
  • 2 Locks
  • Daypack- A small backpack that folds up easily in our larger backpack that we can use during the times we are exploring the city. This allows us to not have to carry our huge bags around with us all the time.

All of the above fit into our Osprey Talon 44 and REI Lookout 40 backpacks.
