The weather’s getting warmer, classes are ending, and you’re counting your vacation days… which only means one thing, it’s time for an unforgettable summer adventure! While most summer destinations will be overloaded with tourists and have ridiculously inflated prices, we’ve found an undiscovered mountain escape that offers the perfect retreat for travelers of all ages.

Only 45 minutes north of Kamloops, Sun Peaks Resort is the epitome of British Columbian beauty. You’ll be surrounded by the best of nature as you choose from a nearly endless list of activities. Its compact size means you don’t need a car and if you’re bringing little ones, they can easily get from one place to another without their legs getting tired. We can’t possibly include all the great stuff about this resort, but here are a few reasons why you should visit Sun Peaks this summer.

1. Alpine Hiking

There’s no better time to hike here than during the alpine blossom season, between mid-July and mid-August. The wildflowers paint the meadows a variety of colors and make for great photos ops.

Some choose to start their hike right in the village, but you also have the option of taking the Sunburst chairlift more than 6,000 feet above sea level and starting your adventure from mid-mountain. There are 16 trails to choose from with difficulty levels ranging from beginner casual strolls to advanced alpine summits. No matter which trail you choose, the panoramic views are to die for.

2. Alpine Sightseeing

If you’re not into hiking, but still want to enjoy the mountaintop scenery, take the Sunburst chairlift to the same mid-mountain point and take a leisurely walk around the area. It’s a perfect place to bring a picnic lunch or you can even chill out on the patio of the Sunburst Lodge. For an easy walk with lovely vistas, check out the #1 Vista Trail, it’s a 1.3-kilometer walk that’s perfect for people of all ages.

Renowned for its downhill racing history, Sun Peaks is the perfect place for bike lovers. The bike park has 40 distinct trails, with lift access, and a dirt jump park. With an extensive network of downhill and cross country biking trails, there’s literally something for every age and skill level. They even offer camps, lessons, and tours.

If you want to make sure you’re here for their amazing biking events, this year Sun Peaks is hosting the 2018 BC Downhill Championships and BC Cup from July 7 – July 8, and their annual Peaks Pedal Fest is happening Labour Day weekend, from September 1 – September 3.

4. Golfing

Sitting at almost 4,000 feet above sea level and offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, Sun Peaks’ 18-hole par 72 Graham Cooke course is British Columbia’s highest and most beautiful golf course.

Every level of golfer can look like a pro as the ball flies further here because of the elevation. Along with the course, you can take advantage of private or group lessons as well as their weekly specials like unlimited golfing, ladies night, kids golf for free, and more. Golfing at Sun Peaks is a fun experience for the whole family.

5. Canoeing or Paddle Boarding

What’s a summer vacation without being on the water? Canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, and kayaking are the perfect ways to relax while getting in some fitness time too. You’ll glide through pristine lakes like McGillivray and Heffley while getting glimpses of local wildlife, birds, and fish.

You can rent your own kayak or canoe for a few hours, or you can go on a 90-minute tour through local lakes in an authentic voyageur canoe. If you’d prefer to go paddle boarding, you can sign up for a private lesson or join one of their daily group sessions.

  • I am really interested in visiting. One day I will get there with my family. I’m not fussy – winter or summer works. We ski so winter would be amazing there.
